For years pet owners laid their loved ones to rest at the Thistlerose Pet Cemetery and Crematory in Greendale. Even Jane Mansfield’s dog is buried there! Eleanor Jolly ran Thistlerose until she died in February at age 92. None of her grandchildren are interested in carrying on the cemetery so they are selling the land… forcing pet owners to dig up their pets for reburial! Records on the burials are sketchy, but over 500 pets may be buried at Thistlerose. How many will be dug up carelessly like weeds or rocks if the land is sold for development?

I wasn’t sure what category to put this story in, but I think it borders on “Abuse and Neglect.” Pet graves are just as sacred as human graves. In a best case scenario, someone would buy the land and keep the cemetery. The cemetery obviously meant a lot to Eleanor Jolly; the best thing her family could do to honor her memory is keep the cemetery in tact. How can you sleep at night knowing your inheritance money came from digging up a cemetery?!

U.S. Senator Herb Kohl’s niece, Jana, is raising awareness awareness about the brutality of puppy mills with help from her Poodle, Baby. Ignoring warnings from friends, Jana visited a puppy mill in Texas to find a dog. Seeing dogs caged like livestock, never setting foot on the ground horrified her. She later adopted Baby, a puppy mill rescue dog.

Baby’s brittle bones caused her to break a leg and eventually need an amputation. Together Baby and Jana are speaking to politicians, celebrities and activists to warn people about buying puppy mill dogs and pets from online breeders. Way to go Jana and Baby!

It’s a sad sign of the times… pet owners giving away pets because of financial hardships or home foreclosures. Some pet owners are foregoing their own medications to care for their pets. Many food pantries are seeing increases in requests for pet food.

If you cannot care for your pet, please contact your local animal shelter, vet or rescue for advice. Please don’t resort to drastic measures like abandonment or euthanization. If you really can’t care for your pet, there may be someone who can.

If you do have the means to support your pet and perhaps give a little more, please consider a donation to your local shelter or rescue. Spring and summer bring litters of puppies and kittens to shelters. They need your help!
